Doctors appointments are an important part of growing up safe and healthy, but they can be scary for young children, especially when meeting new doctors. In this video, Bebe takes a visit to the doctor’s office.

Help prepare children for doctor’s appointments by talking with them about what to expect. You may tell children the name of the doctor they’re going to meet, or what they might see, hear, or feel. Try role-playing a check-up like Bebe’s, taking turns being doctor or nurse. Emphasize to children that doctor’s appointments help them stay safe, healthy, and happy.

Together, watch this video where The Feelingwells visit the dentist. You might point out to children that the dentist uses lots of special tools to keep their smiles healthy.

Ask kids what they remember about their own visits to the dentist, or what they imagine it will be like. Have children look in a mirror and try to count their teeth.

Learning about what a doctor’s tools are used for can help ease children’s fears and discomfort during visits. In this video, Elmo and Mr. Noodle share what a stethoscope is used for. Ask children if they remember any tools that the doctor used at their last health visit, and if they have any questions or things they are wondering about.

Ask children to put their hand on their heart and see if they can feel their heartbeat. You may try counting heartbeats together, and explain that sometimes it can go fast or slower. You may have them feel your heartbeat too, and see if they notice a difference.
